Self Sufficiency The European Union backs us now, but will they if and when the shooting needs to start? If recent history has taught us anything, its best to protect our interest first through deterrence, for in the long run, we have only but ourselves to depend on. I hope everyone has learned through this in Iraq whom we can really count on in the event of a conflict, when friends are really needed. The ones who could have helped as much like the United Kingdom, Australia, etc., wouldn’t. The list is too long to name each country individually, but I will rap off some whom I am deeply disappointed with. France for starters, Chirac has been one of my biggest disappointments. France (Chirac) could have been a little more helpful with Iraq. What have they contributed? Practically nothing. And why should they, they weren’t the ones footing the bill in terms of money or militarily for containing Saddam for a decade. No, they were earning money at our expense over the ordeal. Germany, what have they contributed? Bogus intelligence that caused a major political disruption here in the U.S. and it would be fair to assert that it cost American lives through former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder lack of support and malfeasance. And frankly, after the nightmare they helped to cause here with the bogus intelligence, they should have been knocking on the front door of the Whitehouse asking how they could contribute with troops and with contractor wheelbarrows full of money. “And it was a huge intelligence failure, that spanned the Atlantic from the European shores to the United States“.Russian President Putin didn’t disappoint me at all, I had Putin pegged from day one. He played right into this as I expected he would. That was his second biggest mistake he has ever made since taking over as the Russian President. So we really have to think this through. If Iran doesn’t accept the plan offered by Washington, and the North Korean dictator wants more than just international attention, will our new found self serving allies be willing to cross the line with us in the event that punitive sanctions don’t work? Judging from recent history, I wouldn’t count on it. The great former President Ronald Reagan had the perfect idea. The “star wars space based anti-ballistic missile shield”. We should have seen that through in its entirety, and did whatever was needed to defend that system in space. I personally believe we should have a defensible space based system with a backup land based system. President Reagan knew for the most part, in the end, we have only but a few real friends and ourselves to depend on. That is a policy that should never change, regardless. Time for some old new rules. TW 6/21/2006 On the Net Regan's Star Wars Speech March 23, 1983 |
