Peace with Arafat - He isn't Capable

By Ted Weaver

5/06/2002

Like I said before, Arafat has too many ties with some Arab leaders who are willing to use violence as a means to achieve their foreign policy goals.

Yasser Arafat has quite a violent history behind him. One that is worth noting and that should weigh heavily on ones determination in deciding if he is capable of being a leader of a people and a independent state.

Mr. Arafat -or General Arafat -as he thinks he likes to be called, started his militant type operations against Israel back in 60s and 70s.

Terrorism is terrorism. There is just no other way to look at it. You just can't make peace with a terrorist.

I really wish -the administration would have a one-sided policy with respect to terrorism. You just can't play both sides of the coin when you are dealing with terrorism. This type of policy is going to eventually cause problems with the war on terrorism. Sooner or later -we're going to lose credibility over this type of wishy-washy policy making -as well intentioned as it may have been..

This is what happens -when you have too many chiefs and not enough indians. I am assuming this is why Brit Snider quit -resigned or whatever.

I guess its nice -when you have wishful visionary views - that you can turn a terrorist-rebel rouser into a statesman - but in reality, you're playing with fire holding a view such as that. I guess its better to try and fail -than not to try at all and fail - however, this has been tried how many times before? With numerous failures over numerous administrations.

The very best intelligence can be provided -but it doesn't do a damn bit of good if something constructive isn't done with it.

The Palestinian people need and deserve a new leader -one that is not connected with Arafat or his Fatah in any way. Arafat should be expelled from where he is. Until these requirements are met, it will be impossible to achieve peace.

Just think about this possible scenario -a Palestinian state that is active militarily against Israel with Arafat and Saddam and Assad at the helm. You think there is trouble now - just let this happen.
