Pa. Voters Oust Top State Senate Republicans In Shakeup In the Pennsylvania Primary election held yesterday May 16, 2006, voter outrage over the legislators pay raise along with other considerations, cost the two top State Senate Republicans and fourteen others their jobs. The two top Republicans were General Assembly President Pro-Temp Senator Robert Jubelirer, the chief architect of the pay raise and longtime State Senator and Majority Leader David J. Brightbill.

Whp580 Harrisburg radio talk show host Bob Durgin seen here (in hat) collected over 127,000 signatures on a petition to repeal the state legislator pay raises. Durgin attempted to deliver the petition directly to President Pro-Temp Senator Robert Jubelirer, but he would not meet with him. Instead, Jubelirer sent an aide (in picture) that Durgin interviewed in the office of the Senator, who accepted the petition on his behalf. The legislators were eventually forced through public pressure to give up their pay raises, and now many who supported it are losing their jobs. There have been thirty retirements and the numbers of those voted out yesterday could rise in yet undecided state legislative races. TW 5/17/2006 |
