Avoiding Information and Misinformation Pitfalls
When all hell brakes loose during war, finding
the truth in an event or matter can become more like a treasure hunt.
Either you find it or you don’t.
News sources like the A.P., Reuters, FOX, ABC, CNN and sometimes the
N.Y. Times, etc., are the most likely sources we American’s turn to find
out exactly what is occurring. But when anonymous sources are used, that
should send up a red flag, not always though, but you should be aware
there are a reason (s) these person (s) don’t want to be identified.
Sometimes there are legitimate reasons for not wanting to be identified,
for instance, for their own security. But sometimes, there can be a
darker ulterior motive for the release of a classified operation
information regarding intelligence. Such as CYA, or for partisan
political gain and other reasons.
In the internet age, we don’t have to rely on the usual news sources.
And when an international event occurs, those interested in finding out
the real truth in a matter should refer themselves to the area of
incident anywhere in the world. All it takes is a little research.
Many of these foreign news services today has an English version online.
But don’t just rely on one, confirm a story from as many as possible.
Just like digging for treasure, you can dig up clues along the way or
find bits and pieces and have to put them together as you go or save for
final analysis. But beware of propaganda and misinformation, and
remember hearsay is not proof.
Myself, I have always been like this. Never to depend on one source, but
verify as much as possible through multiple sources, if possible. Then I
call it as I see it. Uninhibited from political pressures -reasons.
I think back to when Former Secretary of State Colin Powell gave his
famously flawed speech at the U.N., when he was briefing the world about
Iraq’s WMD capabilities.. And this information was supposedly to have
been confirmed and reconfirmed, essentially irrefutable.
Initially, I didn’t buy it. I thought to myself, man, this sounds like a
load of crap. Like something right out of a James Bond movie. Imagine, a
fleet of bio-weapons labs on wheels. A quote from Powell’s speech:
“My colleagues, every statement I make today is backed up by sources,
solid sources. These are not assertions. What we're giving you are facts
and conclusions based on solid intelligence. I will cite some examples,
and these are from human sources“
All the research that I have ever done, I never had heard of anything
about what Powell was talking about. Things just didn‘t seem right and
couldn‘t confirm anything Powell said. I also believed there were way
too many unanswered questions about what could happen, and questions
about the source known as “curveball” whose information sounded more
like he should have been code named “screwball”.

I have always believed Saddam maintained bio and chemical weapon
stockpiles, and still do to this day. But that is another story in of
itself.
I’m not new at this either. Very experienced with a record of
achievement. One of those successes being where a reporter was kidnapped
by a foreign intelligence service and through my analysis and a strategy
set forth, helped to gain the freedom of that person, who is alive
today. That picture was as foggy as they get.
Personally, hopefully, I won’t ever be one to fall for propaganda, a
cover up or a be an unknowing blind operative. I will always call them
as I see them and I’ll let the others be the bi-polar like cheerleaders.
Don’t believe everything you read, confirm it. If you can’t reasonably
confirm it, and it seems illogical, it might be true and then again, it
might not be true.
Former President Ronald Reagan had it exactly right, trust but
verify.
